Behind the blog: Who we are

Hi, I’m Christine. I’m mom to two boys and wife to one much-neglected husband, and a first-year teacher of middle school Spanish, and a writer who has very little time left over—not to mention brain cells—to devote to writing.

These days, I have very little time to devote to anything but my boys and my work, but when I think back to a more selfish time (read: my entire life until having my first son at age 31), it occurs to me that my (first) pregnancy was the beginning of the end of selfishness. And I used it selfishly, but not because I had any grasp of just how selfless I would have to become in order to be a mother; just because what else would I do? I was responsible only for me. Of course I was selfish about it and I’m glad.

The day you become a parent you relinquish that right for a very long time. And so, my goal with this blog, is to help simplify and streamline all the information you’re bombarded with—or aren’t but want to be—during your pregnancy, so you can focus on being selfish and enjoying every minute of it.

Having two pregnancies 17 months apart means a lot of things; one of which is that the second will be nothing like the first. Why? Because you’re chasing a 12-17-month old around during the last half of your pregnancy. During my second pregnancy the only exercise I got was chasing my still-wobbly toddler around. If Ritmo had been around during pregnancy number 1 (read: the last time I exercised regularly), I would have been an eager Ritmo-wearer.

Did you know that music has been found to trigger the relaxation response and lower levels of hormones associated with stress? Music can have the same healing power as yoga, meditation and breathing exercises can have.

The same way that as parents we marvel with some envy at our children’s toys compared to our own childhood’s toys, every time a smart new product is rolled out that eases one of the many facets of pregnancy that make it, um, less than fun for some of us, we relive the sore back, endless nausea, the incessant heartburn…I could go on, but why bother. No matter what ails you, the end result is well worth it. (I promise!)

I hope you’ll come back often during your pregnancy—and beyond! Drop us a note and let us know what you like, and what you don’t. Thanks for reading!
